DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE HARBOR POLICE ACADEMY

The Harbor Police Academy was created in 1974 and granted Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) accreditation as a certified basic training academy for law enforcement officers. The Academy trains recruits not only for the Harbor Police Department, but for the Orleans Levee Board, Crescent City Connection, St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, other Louisiana sheriff’s departments and major university police departments.

The Harbor Police Academy is a 13 week P.O.S.T. Training Academy held at Harbor Police Headquarters. The Academy includes an academic portion to prepare recruits for the P.O.S.T. Test. Additional training requirements include firearms, tactical police driving, defensive tactics, police baton and PR-24 training, and physical fitness.

The Harbor Police Academy Staff is made up of Harbor Police Instructors as well as instructors from other Local, State and Federal law enforcement agencies.

The Academy staff is also responsible for any in-service training needed by the department to ensure all officers employed by the Harbor Police Department maintain their yearly certifications. In-service training also includes updating officers in revisions of laws as well as changes in police tactics.
